Description of the genus

Submerged perennial dioecious herbs. Stems branched, weak, to 1 m. Leaves linear to linear-lanceolate, closely arranged so that stem and leaves together have a cylindric outline, ascending or recurved, toothed. Flowers unisexual. Male flowers become detached and free-floating before flowering; female flowers float on surface attached to plant by long perianth tube. Sepals and petals 3, free; stamens or staminodes 3; stigmas 6, 2 per style. Fruit an ovate capsule, beaked at apex.

Worldwide: 9 species in tropical Africa and Madagascar
