Shrubs or trees. Leaves alternate, simple. Inflorescence a usually terminal panicle or corymb. Flowers bisexual or polygamous, actinomorphic. Calyx 5-lobed, deeply divided to near the base. Corolla tube cylindric or widely funnel-shaped; lobes oblong, spreading or reflexed. Stamens 5, inserted at the corolla throat, exserted. Style terminal, well-developed, 2-branched, each topped by a stigma. Fruit subspherical, fleshy; pyrenes 4; outer surface smooth to ridged. Derivation of name: for Georg Dionysius Ehret, 1708-1770, German gardener, botanist and botanical artist. Worldwide: 75 species in tropical and warm regions. DRC: 4 taxa.
