Description of the genus

Usually foetid, annual herbs, sometimes perennial and shrubby. Calyx tubular, 5-lobed; the tube circumscissile near the base after anthesis, leaving an annular remnant which expands in fruit. Corolla white, violet or purplish: tube long and narrow, flared upwards with short cuspidate or caudate lobes. Fruit a spherical, spiny (rarely spines 0) usually dehiscent capsule.

Worldwide: 12 species, native to southern N America and widely introduced and naturalised into warm and temperate regions of the world
