Paepalanthus Kunth

Description of the genus

Herbs, annual or perennial, the stem short or elongate. Leaves thin to thick and coriaceous; capitula single or arranged in umbels. Capitulum villous; floral bracts present; flowers 2–3-merous; petals eglandular. Male sepals free except at the extreme base; petals connate into a glabrous infundibuliform tube bearing the stamens on its truncate upper margin. Female sepals free except at the extreme base and usually becoming rigid at maturity; petals free. Seeds variable, often with longitudinal ridges.

Worldwide: 500 species mostly in South America.
