Large perennial plants with leafy shoots fully developed at flowering time; leaf sheaths always forming a distinct pseudostem; leaves distichous. Inflorescences arising from the base or from a rhizome. Flowers large, zygomorphic. Calyx spathaceous. Lateral petals narrow, posterior larger, hood-like. Staminode 1, large, petaloid (labellum); stamen 1, free; apex 3-lobed. Fruit a berry, usually red. Worldwide: c. 50 species widely distributed in tropical Africa. DRC: 1 taxon. |
