Description of the genus

Dioecious trees or shrubs. Leaves alternate, simple, stipulate. Flowers appearing before or after the leaves, in usually erect catkins, catkin scales entire; each flower with 1-2 fleshy glands; stamens 2-many.

Derivation of name: the classical name for willows

Worldwide: About 500 species, mainly north temperate but some tropical and south temperate.
