Small, annual or perennial, often tufted, herbs. Stipules 0. Leaves linear-subulate, opposite and connate. Inflorescence of dichasial cymes or (in ours) solitary and terminal. Flowers 4-5-merous. Sepals free. Petals minute, white, entire, sometimes 0. Stamens as many as or twice as many as the sepals. Styles 4-5, alternating with the sepals. Capsule splitting to the base into as many valves as styles. Worldwide: c.20 species in northern temperate zones and on mountains in the tropics. DRC: 1 taxon. |
