Suffrutex with annual shoots up to 2 m tall arising from a woody rootstock; stems and branches red-brown to dark-brown, cylindric and glabrous on the lower parts, subangular and ± shortly puberulous or glabrescent towards the apex, rather densely leafy; leaves mostly subverticillate, petiole 0.2-0.5 cm, gooved on upper face and convex beneath, puberulous or minutely appressed-hairy to glabrescent, lamina discolorous, cinnamon-coloured or greenish-brown to dark brown , shining and glabrous above, ± whitish beneath (densely covered with minute and appressed hairs), (3)5-16 x (0.3)0.8-2 cm, linear to oblong-lanceolate, frequently infolded at the midrib, attenuate, very acute and mucronate at the apex, with thickened pale undulate or flat margins, subcoriaceous to coriaceous, midrib impressed above, very prominent and ± sparesly appressed-hairy beneath, lateral nerves 1-1.5 mm apart, slightly prominent above and a little more so below, usually not forked until the margin, tertiary nerves and veins not visible; inflorescences terminal and subverticillate and axillary, the latter generally shorter than the leaves, up to 3 cm long on peduncles 0.5-9 cm long; flowers shortly pedicellate; calyx segments 1.6-2.2 x 0.7-1.3 mm, oblong-ovate to lanceolate, acute, externally appressed-hairy; petals whitish, c. 3 x 1 mm, oblong-lanceolate, externally appressed-hairy with a triangular inflexed apex; drupe black, shining, 6 x 7 mm, broadly obovate, compressed, a little asymmentric, retuse or emarginated, wrinkled. |
