Description of the family

Trees, shrubs, shrublets or lianes. Stipules 0. Leaves alternate, held in one plane in two rows, entire, aromatic when crushed. Flowers solitary or paired to fasciculate or cymose, terminal or axillary, usually bisexual, actinomorphic, Sepals (2-)3. Petals (4-)6 in 2 whorls, free or ± united. Stamens numerous, spiral or 6-12 and whorled. Carpels 1-many, free or united at the base or completely united to form a 1-locular ovary; ovules 1-many. Styles free or united, or 0. Fruit usually composed of 1-10 free carpels, rarely a 1-locular fruit (Annona).

Worldwide: 112 genera and 2,150 species, tropics.
